
MAIMANA (SW) – At least nine civilians got killed in a mortar attack on a market in Faryab province, an official said on Friday.
The provincial police spokesman, Abdul Kreem Yourish, said the incident took place in the Khwaja Sabz Posh district. Blaming the Taliban for firing mortar shells on a crowded market, he said nine people got killed and more than 30 got injured in this incident. He added armed clashes between the security forces and the Taliban are underway in the district.
The Taliban spokesman, Qari Yosuf Ahmadi, has rejected the allegation.
Separately, at least 18 security forces got killed in the Taliban’s attacks in Farah and Herat provinces. According to well-placed sources, the insurgents attacked security check posts in the Pashtun Zarghun district of Herat and killed ten policemen. In a similar attack, eight soldiers were killed on the outskirts of Farah City, the provincial council members confirmed.
