KABUL (SW) – The World Food Day was marked here on Tuesday amid reports as many as 9.13 million Afghans are still living below the poverty line.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock joined hands with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations  to mark the day.

Speaking on the occasion, Zlatan Milisic, WFP country director, said the food security efforts are badly affected by the ragging violence and crippling drought. He said these circumstances have raised the numbers of Afghans living below the poverty line to 9.13 million. According to the WFP country director, a total of 3.5 million citizens in Afghanistan are faced with food security concerns.

Naseer Ahmad Durrani, minister for the MAIL, noted that drought-affected citizens in 25 provinces have been supplied with 119,000 tons of wheat from the strategic reserves. According to the minister, up to 60,000 tons of wheat have been distributed by the WFP with financial support of $ 1.4 million by the USAID.
