KANDAHAR CITY (SW) – An estimated 85,000 internally displaced families in Kandahar are longing for help amid the harsh winter.
In conversation with Salam Watandar, two such IDPs, Akhtar Mohammad and Toor Pekay, said they have been making rounds to the governor’s office on daily basis seeking help, but to no avail. They said poverty and displacement coupled with the harsh winter have made their lives miserable.
When contacted, head of the refugees and repatriation directorate, Dost Mohammad Nayab, acknowledged the troubles faced by the IDPs. He added food aid has been distributed multiple times among the needy people here.
According to him, some 85,000 IDPs from Kandahar and nearby Zabul, Uruzgan, Farah, Helmand and Badghes are taking shelter here.
Local officials said an additional 12,686 families repatriated families from Pakistan via the Spin Boldak crossing point are also need of aid and support.
