80,000 students in Ghor deprived of education

KABUL (SW) – At least 80,000 students in Ghor province are deprived of education owing to insecurity, outdated social norms and poor governance.

According to the local civil society representatives, out of over 134,000 students, some 80,000 were unable to continue with their studies. They said more than 600 schools are closed out of a total of 800 public schools in the province and a large number of the students have joined the war fronts.

A local civil society activist, Mohammad Hassan Hakimi, told a presser that some 77,000 students including 56,000 girls are enrolled in schools. But, at least 88,000 other remains out of schools, including some 40,000 girls.

Their findings indicate that no girls go to schools in the Pasaband, Dolena and Chaharsada districts as well as in some parts of Saghar, Teura and Shahrak districts.

The head of directorate of women affairs, Haleema Purastish, said in this regard that the situation remains alarming. She said lack of monitoring and regulation have denied the girls the opportunities to study.

However, the directorate of education has discarded the claims by the local civil society activists. Ahmad Sabir Noori, director education, claimed the monitoring and regulation in collaboration with the local elders is ongoing effectively. He only confirmed closure of some 30 public schools in the province.

Prior to this, the Ghor civil society blamed the Ministry of Education for lack of proper buildings for 70 per cent schools in the province.
