SHARANA (SW): Officials at Education Department in southeastern Paktika province said that 75 percent of girls have been deprived of education due to prevailing cultural issues in the province.

Kochai Zazai, Head of Education Department in the province, said that lack of female teachers and cultural issues have been the reasons behind the dearth of girls’ education in Paktika.

He told SalamWatandar that only 15 percent of girl students have access to basic education.

According to Zazai, many schools in the province have no proper buildings where girls can go and study with peace of mind.

A number of girl students too said that some families don’t allow their daughters to go to school.

They said that the perception for girls’ education has been changing in Paktika.

Aminullah Sahreq, Governor of Paktika, said in a gathering that local officials and tribal elders were to blame for the decrease in the number of girl students.

There are 300 schools in the province out of which 21 schools are open to 30,000 girl students.
