65 previously closed schools reopened in Zabul

ZABUL (SW) – At least 65 previously closed schools have been reopened in Zabul province thanks to the cooperation of the local community.

Nasrullah Zahed, head of the directorate of education, told Salam Watandar these schools have been reopened in Khak-e-Afghan, Shamalzay, Atghar and Seyore districts. He added at least 30 public schools still remain closed in the province owing to different security reasons.

He added though the armed rebels were opposed to reopening of the schools, however, the local community build enough pressure to compel them to allow the schools to be reopen. The Zabul residents have welcomed the reopening of schools.

Jameela and Fawzia, two girl students in the provincial capital, Qatat, said the locals should ensure girls have equal opportunities for studies in the province. The local population has hailed the reopening of schools, and has vowed to send boy as well as girls to schools.

There are 250 registered schools in Zabul. According to head of the directorate of education, at least 70,000 students are registered here including 14,000 girls. This year 660 students including 100 girls graduated from high-schools here, he said.

There are plans in place to develop 39 more schools in Zabul province next year.
