KANDAHAR CITY (SW): A security source who wished not to be named in the report has confirmed that at least 48 soldiers of a battalion have ‘surrendered’ to the Taliban in Uruzgan province.
The source added that this battalion was under the siege of the Taliban near the provincial capital Tarinkot for the past month and a half. Dost Mohammad Nayab, spokesman for the provincial governor, said in this regard they are not in contact with forces in this particular area for technical reasons, and they cannot provide exact updates about the situation.
Meanwhile, Khan Ali Hazara, spokesman for the Afghan National Army (ANA)’s 205-Attal Corps, has rejected the reports about the battalion’s fall. He told Salam Watandar that the battalion is doing just fine, and efforts are underway to re-locate them to a different area.
On their part, the Taliban claimed that the battalion has fallen to them. If proven true, this would be the third unit of the security forces to have surrendered to the Taliban in the province.
