JAWZJAN (SW) – The Taliban have released 42 soldiers in Jawzjan province who were taken as hostage when insurgents overran Qosh Tapa district here.
Abdul Wahed, the provincial police chief, said the Taliban overran Qosh Tapa district late on Monday. He added after the fall of the district, up to 50 policemen were also taken captive by the Taliban. He added only 4 of those policemen managed to flee and return to the provincial capital, Sheberghan, and the rest remain unaccounted for.
The Taliban’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujaed, claimed in a social media post that of the 150 troopers detained during takeover of Qush Tepa district, 42 have been released.
According to the security officials, soon an operation would be launched to retake the district.
