40,000 women to be empowered in 5000 villages

KABUL (SW) – A number of ministries and public directorates on Saturday shared their future plans in line with the Women Economic Empowerment and Rural Development Program.

Rehmatullah Qureshi, director for women empowerment at the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, said on the occasion the past year was full of achievements in this regard. He said the WEERDP would be implemented with full force in 5000 villages across the country this year that would benefit some 40,000 women.

He added bank accounts have been activated for some 15000 women and 850 more jobs would be created for women for the sole purpose of women empowerment.

Similar commitments were expressed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock.

Torpaikay Momand, director at the Ministry of Education, said education for girls and women is pivotal in ensuring their economic empowerment. She said out of an estimated 9 million students enrolled in schools, 38 per cent are female. She added 55 per cent of the 39,000 students at teacher training institutes are also female.

Torpaikay added 7500 new contract teachers would be hired and short-term training courses would be arranged for 45,000 female teachers.

First Lady, Rula Ghani, said in her remarks that though significant progress has been made towards women empowerment over past some years, but much more needs to be done. She stressed serious attention should be paid towards the rights and representation of women in the peace process.
