250 Afghans to be executed in Iran

06/01/2016

TALEQAN CITY (SW): Residents in Kalafgan district in northern province Takhar, said that 7 of the district’s residents were executed in Iran who were accused of drug smuggling while 250 more are soon to be executed.

The dead bodies were shifted to Taleqan and later were put on the street in front of governor’s office by their relatives and families as a sign of protest.

The relatives and families of the dead, accused government’s officials and human rights institutions of indifference and urged upon the government to do something to stop such executions in Iran.

A number of their relatives said that judicial institutions in Iran are willing to release those Afghans who are accused of drug smuggling, in return for money.

Sunat Temur, Spokesman for Governor in Takhar, too said that a number of Kalafghan’s residents have been sentenced to death in Iran. He added that these Afghans have been arrested while smuggling drugs to Iran.

He added that a wide network of drug smugglers are active in the district who misuse the youth for drug smuggling purposes.

He further said that local government has managed to arrest nearly 100 smugglers so far.

The execution of Kalafghan’s residents in Iran is not unprecedented as last year 5 residents of the very district were too executed in Iran.

Local officials said that their efforts in preventing such executions have been in vain. They added that the uptick in drug smuggling to Iran has its roots to unemployment in the district.

They further said that creating job opportunities in the district will put an end to the menace of drug smuggling in Kalafgan district.
