GARDEZ (SW): A longstanding feud over land between the Kharoti and Mangal tribes has finally been resolved in Paktia province after 24 years.

The conflict over land, water and mountains between these two tribes has so far claimed more than 20 lives, and has left many injured. Local elders’ ‘Jirga’ (council) and the government’s supervision helped end this deadly dispute.

Janat Gul Mangal and Gul Wazir, two tribal leaders, told a gathering in this connection that the two sides engaged in this feud should put an end to it, and educate and raise the younger generation in peaceful environment. They said the two tribes have agreed to end the conflict for the sake of future generation.

Shamim Khan Katawazi, Governor Paktia, said on the occasion violators of the agreement would face legal actions.

Tribal disputes over various matters often turn deadly in various parts of the country, and such tribal councils have proved handy in many instances in resolving them.
