LASHKARGAH (SW): Heavy fighting between the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and the Taliban is underway in Helmand province where up to 100 militants have been reported dead in the past 48 hours.
Ahmad Shakib, deputy spokesman for the 215-Maiwand Corps, told Salam Watandar that around 100 Taliban militants have been killed and many more wounded in the fighting. He added that fresh units of the Special Forces of the Afghan National Army (ANA) have arrived to take on the rebels in Helmand. Shakib claimed that the advancing militants have been over powerd and pushed back.
Shakib went on to say that soon the government forces would get back to their original positions and get the encroached areas back.
The Taliban on the other hand claimed to have inflicted heavy losses on the government forces. Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, told local reporters in a message that they have overrun a number of check posts in Helmand.
It is worth noticing that the Taliban stormed check posts in Grishk and Naad Ali districts two days ago and claimed to have killed a number of ANSF men. The confirmed official figures are not known but locals estimate as many as 50 ANSF men have lost lives in these attacks.
