1 killed and 10 injured as mortar hits school in Kunduz

KUNDUZ CITY (SW): A mortar has hit Sher Khan high school in Kunduz city which killed 1 student and injured 10 more.

The local authorities have said at least 6 mortars have hit different parts of Kunduz city since morning. Enamudding Rahmani, provincial police spokesman, said the mortars have killed one student and injured 9 more.

Marzia Salam Yaftali, head of provincial public hospital, has said 1 dead body of a student and 10 more injured were transported to the hospital. “All of them are students”, confirmed Yaftali. Mahfoozullah Akbari, northwest police zone spokesman, told Salam Watandar that the mortars were fired from Char Dara district of the province towards the Kunduz city. The spokesman did not provide any numbers on the casualties, but said that the Taliban insurgents attacked a security outpost in the early hours on Thursday blocking the Kunduz-Takhar highway for traffic. “The fighting is ongoing between the Taliban insurgents and the security forces on the highway”, informed Akbari.

A security source in Kunduz on conditions of anonymity told Salam Watander that the mortars were launched to hit the Municipality Hotel in the city which has been recently transformed into military administration office.

The Taliban insurgents had overrun the Kunduz-Takhar highway two weeks ago, but security forces recaptured the highway. To read more click here.
